38 Miles to KIMO!

Back Home Up Next

This was taken at 1625 hours EST and I was starting to think about my approach procedures.  I knew there would be lots of non-radio traffic of anything from hotrod experimentals to paraplanes and didn't have a NOTAM nor approach procedures of any kind.  I figured I would get them on the radio but that didn't work out at all.   I heard a glider tow plane but nobody would respond to my requests.  As I got closer I saw a group of ultralights in formation on the downwind for 28 but that was all!   I dropped in a mile or so behind them  and planned to follow them in.   When they executed a formation fly-by and started climbing out, I was puzzled and debated to follow or go ahead and land in the grass where they flew over.  I landed as far down the grass on the approach end of 28 as I could and taxied up to a man with a orange vest for futher instructions.  He directed me across 3 grass runways and into the tiedown area.

That formation flight I followed in?  It was Nathaniel Halsmer's missing man formation!  God rest his soul.
