While final touches were being done on the airframe, Mark had me
pull the new Bluehead 582 out of the crate and get it ready to go on the plane.
Notice the extra water hose on top of the head? Rotax has incorporated constant
circulation water cooling. Before this modification if the thermostat was closed
water would just sit until the water heated sufficiently to open the thermostat.
This resulted in hot spots on the engine while the thermostat cycled open and closed until
radiator water reached operating temperature. This is no longer the case with the
new Bluehead 582. The other major change was the rotary valve seal which would go
out long before overhaul allowing water to mix with rotary valve oil and increase wear on
the rotary valve as well as lean the fuel mixture with cooling water. No more!
That's Mark in the background talking carbs with another customer.
Ain't she a beauty!
