Repaired Cage Rail

Back Home Up Next

And here we are better than new.  Looks like a sleeve, eh?   Nope.  These guys can repair a 4130 chromoly tube and amaze you doing it!

First, Andy put blocks under the cage then put a jack beneath the buckled tube.  With a blow torch he heated the tube evenly all the way around while putting very small amounts to pressure with the jack under the heated tube where it was bent.  He then let it cool, removed the jack and checked for straightness around the circumference of the tube with a bar of aluminum about 8" long.  He heated a little and jacked a little until it was as straight as an arrow.  He knew exactly how much and where to apply the heat for imperceiveable amounts of bending.  It was amazing to watch this guy working.

Second, he measured for a template to use on the plasma cutter and cut out a rectangular piece of 4130 sheet metal.  He clamped it to the top of the straightened tube and tack welded it in place.  Then he went to heating with the torch and bending it around the existing tube.  Once formed into half a tube he cut another piece and did the same thing on the bottom of the existing tube.  Andy then welded everything in place, cleaned and painted it black.  Both sides were repaired where the main landing gear drag strut attaches to the cage.
