This was just past Kentucky Lake. You can tell that I had been
looking at the scenery more than my course. That's another danger of flying.
It's so easy to get distracted and next thing you know you're in trouble. No
trouble here, only a minor course correction but I still had the beautiful Kentucky Lake
on my mind. Just 80 or so miles ahead something else would get my attention.
All of my attention exclusive to everything else!
Notice my water temperature again. Another 1000 feet of altitude
and my water temperature dropped from 170° to 160° at the same 5900 RPMs further
deceiving me about my engine status. Trouble was ahead and the warning signs were
subtle. The standard temperature change per 1000 feet is 4 or 5 degrees. I
didn't feel any change more than that. Definately not the 10° indicated by water
temperature. Something else was going on and I was blind to it.
