Kentucky Lake Dam

Back Home Up Next

I was very much looking forward to flying over Kentucky Lake as I had heard how beautiful it was.  It was all of that and a little scary.  My crossing point was just south of the dam pictured below.  According to the sectional I had to cross 3 miles of water.  At my preferred cruising altitude and best glide ratio of 8:1 I had barely enough gliding distance to get to dry land at the midpoint over water but once I began crossing I realized there were no good looking emergency landing areas.  A chill went over me and I debated whether to climb some more or just stay the course.  I pushed the throttle forward to full and trimmed to a gradual climb of about 400-500 FPM.  That would maintain a 60 MPH groundspeed and give me another 1000 feet of altitude once over the middle.  I still wasn't positive that I could make an uneventful emergency landing but I felt better about a smaller risk factor and I was too high to know without any doubt my chosen landing area was without obstacles anyway.   There's risk in flying no matter how much you try to eliminate it.

Kentucky Dam State Park airport is in the box.  The perfect place for an amphib.  I'll do that one day.
