Still cruising to Murray, KY. I love my Garmin 45 GPS!
It makes cross country so easy but it's no substitute for pilotage using a compass and
sectional map with ground references. Although I used my GPS as primary navigation I
was always double-checking my sectional and ground references.
I did get an email a week before the trip from a gentleman who saw my
preliminary flight plan and asked me if I had planned flight time to reference
points. I told him that I had not and immediately I got a reply effectively stating
that I better carry a backup GPS since I was too lazy to do a complete flight plan based
on pilotage and it was stupid to take such a risk on a trip like this. He also
stated that I was doing a disservice to all aviation and I had no business being an
instructor. He irritated me just a little bit but I said to my Lord, "Father, I
need some spirit of grace for words right now." I chuckled as I replied to the
strong statements, "That's alright, not only do I teach pilotage skills to my
students but alternative methods of navigation as well. That's what so nice about
ultralights. If my GPS goes out I just land in a field behind the nearest Wal-Mart
and buy me a new one! Try that in your Cessna!"
