I passed just a mile southeast of Martin, TN. Just a minute or
two prior to this shot I heard an aircraft make a radio call for 10 miles southeast out of
Union, TN airport. The pilot never stated his altitude so I made a quick reference
to my sectional and I knew we were close so I started scanning. Sure enough I
spotted the aircraft passing just ahead to the right and about 500' below me. I made
a radio call, "Aircraft ten miles southeast approaching Union airport, ultralight
echo zero zero one romeo lima passing 9 miles southeast of Union heading five zero at two
thousand three hundred feet, I have you in sight." A few seconds went by and I
heard, "Ultralight I do not have a visual." I responded with
"Ultralight romeo lima one mile off your nine o'clock five hundred feet above."
A few more seconds went by and he responded, "Ultralight romeo lima, I have
you in sight. That sure is a neat looking plane! Where are you headed?"
I pushed my Comtronics push to talk switch and said, "Marshall, MI for the
KIMO Ultralight National Competition." He said, "That's quite a trip!
You have a safe and pleasant flight." I said, "Thank you and the
same to you". I thought to myself that was one more GA pilot who had a good
experience with an ultralight. I had accomplished my first objective of the trip and
was feeling real good about the experience. It was the first of many emotions to
come, very soon some not so pleasant.
